This past Friday night I drove from Aspen to Vail to spend the weekend skiing with several Ski.com Mountain Vacation Specialists. Upon my arrival, I spoke with some locals who told me about the day's powder and tales of taking some of the best runs of their lives. Their excitement was contagious and actually overpowered my disappointment about not being able to experience it first hand. But things were looking up for me. Shortly after I arrived, the skies opened up AGAIN, dropping snow at what seemed like a rate of two inches per hour.

Like any powder hound, I checked the snow report as soon as I woke up on Saturday and learned that Vail had received another 11" overnight (only one inch short of the 12 inches needed for the $12 lift ticket promotion - call 1-888-498-8448 for info). I eagerly met most of my group at the gondola at 9:00 a.m. and immediately grabbed a ride up the mountain. (Not everyone in the group was there yet, but there really aren't any friends on a powder day.)

I'm not going to go into detail about the endless amount of thigh-deep snow we found everywhere we went. I won't bore you by trying to explain what it was like to glide through seemingly bottomless powder for an entire day. I would, however, like to tell you about one of those moments I won't soon forget.

I was in the back bowls skiing with about 10 other people. As we were all traversing skier's right across the top of one of the bowls I decided to drop in first; apparently much sooner than anyone else. After effortlessly plowing through some of the deepest snow in recent memory, I decided to stop and survey the scene. While my heavy breathing echoed through my helmet, I looked around in all directions and realized there weren't any other skiers or riders anywhere near me. As my breathing subsided allowing my hearing to return, I realized there were distant joyful screams coming from every direction. I don't have enough space here to really explain how I felt at that moment, but I think I had some sort of epiphany. I realized that all of those yelps, yeehaws and yippies were coming from skiers and riders having one of the best days of their lives – and so was I.
